The Ebor Singers celebrate the splendour of Baroque Venice tomorrow evening in the Chapter House, York Minster, in the company of organist Peter Seymour and theorbo player David Miller.

Few works capture the glories of St Mark's, Venice, as Monteverdi's 1610 Vespers do. Originally intended by the composer as a musical CV when he was looking for a new job, this work has become a defining piece of the Baroque era.

"Monteverdi's skill was to combine the old-style writing of Renaissance composers with the flamboyant virtuoso gestures of opera, " says Paul Gameson, director of the Ebor Singers. "Nothing like this had been heard before, and it became the benchmark for a generation of composers.

"While the Vespers ensured Monteverdi was remembered long after his death, the piece also did the job for him in the short term.

Within three years, he had moved from the court of the Duke of Mantua and was working at St Mark's Basilica, Venice."

This month also sees the release of a CD of music by York composer Roger Marsh, featuring the Ebor Singers alongside the Hilliard Ensemble.

The choir will finish its 2006-7 concert season with Fauré's Requiem of June 2, and more details of all its activities can be found at www.eborsingers.org

Tickets for tomorrow's 7.30pm concert cost £12, concessions £8, students £6 (£3 standby from 7pm), under 15s free; available on the door, on 0845 8385117 or via email to info@eborsingers. rg
