Tipped by NME and Q magazines to be one of the top ten bands to see in 2008, Glasvegas play The Junction, in York, tomorrow on their first proper headline tour in support of their new single It's My Own Cheating Heart That Makes Me Cry.
What made you choose It's My Own Cheating Heart as your follow-up to Daddy's Gone?
"I think the guitarist said 'this has got to be the single' and we all thought 'cool', but we're not really promoting the single on the tour. The single will sell itself. Right now, it's all about doing live shows."
Do you feel under added pressure thanks to all the media interest?
"Nah, it doesn't put pressure on us. I think there are bands that would say 'bull****' if we say there's pressure there. It's only music and it shouldn't be taken too seriously. At the end of the day, we can only do our best."
But you must welcome all the praise?
"Of course, if anyone attaches value to anything in life, it's quite nice."
How do you feel about being championed by Alan McGee, the driving force behind the Creation and Poptones labels?
"We've been in regular touch with Alan, but not about the music, but to talk about life; we've become pals with him, but he hasn't directly given us advice."
Do you see yourself as the latest link of great Scottish bands with a love of American West Coast surf pop and Phil Spector, from The Jesus And Mary Chain to The Pastels and Teenage Fanclub?
"To be honest, I've never heard The Pastels before, though I've heard of them and I've never heard the Teenage Fanclub either, but I like the attitude of the Mary Chain. There are so many types of music that have inspired me to write a song that I can't point to one thing in particular."
Is attitude more of an influence on you than specific music?
"Aye, I'd say it is. Phil Spector was going for that orchestral sound with his wall of sound, and that's similar to my band."
How is your debut album progressing?
"Hopefully we're going to start recording next month; it's going to be confirmed in the next few days, and it could be in New York. The release date will probably be out of our hands, but realistically it will be summertime or the back end of summer."
- Glasvegas and The Station Club play The Junction, Leeman Road, York, tomorrow, 8pm. Tickets: £5 advance (0870 060 0100), £6 door.
