THE National Centre for Early Music May Jazz Weekend opens tonight with the Tom Athurs’ Trio’s individual take on the great composition/improvisation debate. Joining Tom in this jazz discussion at 7.30pm will be Jasper Hoiby, double bass, and Stuart Ritchie, percussion.
Cuban violinist Omar Puente showcases his debut solo album, From There To Here, tomorrow at 7.30pm, and Sunday will be the busiest day with three events, kicking off with a Late Learners’ Jazz Workshop, led by York saxophonist Rob Lavers and his session musicians, at 9.30am.
The self-styled jazz odd couple of trumpeter and composer Guy Barker and vocalist, pianist and fellow broadcaster Ian Shaw present Barker & Shaw At The Movies at 4pm, and Farrago, a student ensemble from the University of York Jazz Orchestra, conclude the weekend with original compositions, arrangements and contemporary jazz at 8pm.
