Philip Moore will be on baton duty for York Musical Society for the last time on June 19 before handing over to Robert Sharpe, who will become musical director in September.
For his farewell concert, the former Master of the Music at York Minster has chosen to conduct Elgar’s The Dream Of Gerontius.
Elgar wrote his setting of Cardinal Newman’s poem as a commission for the Birmingham Festival in 1900, and on completing it, he proclaimed: “This is the best of me... this, if anything of mine, is worth your memory.” Philip has former Minster Songman Peter Auty to sing the part of Gerontius and the Ebor Singers to form the semi-chorus, while the ranks will be swelled by visitors from the Philharmonischer Chor of Münster to mark the long link between the two choirs.
“Philip has trained and conducted the society for 27 years and this concert will undoubtedly be an emotional experience for Philip and the choir,” says publicity officer Fiona Long. “We would like to fill the Minster for this memorable occasion.”
Tickets for the 7.30pm concert are available from the Minster box office, tel 08449 390015 or online at boxoffice.yorkminster.org
