AFTER launching last November with a sold-out concert at St Olave’s Church, community choir Millegro now takes over York Theatre Royal for its second engagement.
The 60-strong contemporary community choir was set up by Ewa Salecka, a Polish musician, vocalist and composer, when she moved to York last year with her partner Greg Birch, pianist, singer and her accompanist.
“We wish to create something that is otherwise from what people usually associate with choirs,” says Ewa. “It’s been such a success… we have made sure we do different things, so people get the opportunity to perform jazz, world music and modern arrangements.”
Wednesday’s 7.30pm concert, entitled Sure On This Shining Night, will showcase music from Vivaldi, Bernstein and Astor Piazzolla to The Beatles, plus modern world music songs.
The concert will also feature Dave Smyth on percussion and saxophonist Tim Twomey.
Further planned appearances by Millegro include York Carnival next month and then a prominent slot at this summer’s Hebden Bridge Festival.
All proceeds from programme sales on Wednesday will go to Jessie’s Fund. For tickets, phone 01904 623568.
