SINGER and songwriter Adam Dawson launches his debut single, Lazy Susan, at Vudu Lounge, York, on Sunday evening.

The York musician will not only play a live set but also screen the single’s promo video, whose locations included the cocktail bar in Swinegate. Copies of the enhanced CD, featuring the video as bonus material, will be on sale on the night.

Released on his own label, the single contains three Dawson compositions, the title track, Mirror Mirror and Silver Skies. Poignantly, the latter is dedicated to fellow York musician and close friend Dirk Macrae, who fronted one of Adam’s first bands, The Asylum Seekers, and sadly passed away in 2006.

For his solo release, Adam has handled all the vocals and instruments himself, including acoustic and electric guitars, Hammond organ, piano and drums, engineered by John Spence at Fairview Studio in Hull.

“Lazy Susan is my first crack at writing a really radio-friendly track, with catchy hooks, rich harmonies and warm melodies reminiscent of some Sixties’ bands, while still being fresh and modern,” says Adam.

The idea for the music video came after Adam wrote a background score for The Fantastic Finn, an independent film made in York. Paul Richardson, who was involved in that film, duly came on board to direct the promo.

“As the song’s title was inspired by a revolving serving dish, the video charts the spinning journey of one girl’s evening on the town, rolling up at a house party and eventually coming to the conclusion that she needs to change her ways in order to get off her hedonistic merry-go-round,” says Adam.

“The cast and crew were fantastic, and the actress playing the part of Susan, Roxanna Klimaszewska – who also appears on the CD cover – really captured the essence of a character that I think many people will recognise in their lives.”

Adam released his debut album, In The Beginning, at the age of 20 as long ago as March 2004 during his student days at Hull University, when he performed solo and in the covers’ duo The Beatniks.

His latest songs are available through his website adamdawson.co.uk and through many of the major digital download services, as well as at his live shows.

Entry is free on Sunday when the doors open at 7pm for the 8pm start.
