YORK music promoter Joe Coates is returning to independent status after a parting of the ways with Stereo in Gillygate.

“I’ve left Stereo and am only putting gigs on for fun/myself again, which is a nice feeling,” says Joe. “As a consequence, I’ll only be doing them occasionally but attempting to make them as special as possible.”

Dusting off his old Please Please You hat once more, Joe is teaming up with Sea Records to present Calvin Johnson at All Saints Church, in North Street, on August 6 with a supporting cast of Stink Taps, Dallas Boner and Alisia Casper from 8pm.

“Calvin will be performing in York for the first time; to celebrate, we’ve hired a church, just to make the occasion extra special,” says Joe.

“Indie rock cannot be better defined than in the life and music of Calvin Johnson. He started legendary American independent record label K Records; he’s recorded or worked with Built To Spill, Modest Mouse, Beck, Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, The Gossip, members of Mudhoney and Kurt Cobain; and he fronted a trio, Beat Happening, who released five albums between 1982 and 1992 on Sub Pop, Rough Trade and Sarah Records.

“A couple of years ago, he made a solo album, Catharsis In Crisis, and he’ll be singing songs from that and his ridiculously extensive back catalogue in York. Just that voice and a guitar, perfect.”

All three solo support acts from the Sea Records stable perform live rarely. Boner and Casper both have new records out this year.

Tickets cost £6 in advance from Attic Records in York, Jumbo Records in Leeds or online from wegottickets.com/event/87676 or ticketweb.co.uk
