The University of York’s Baroque Day at the National Centre for Early Music, York, tomorrow takes a Grand Tour of four major musical centres: Paris, London, Venice and Leipzig.

Fashionable in the 17th, 18th and early 19th centuries, the European Grand Tour exposed travellers to the latest cultural fashions as well as to classical antiquity.

Tomorrow’s concerts by Compagnia d’Instrumenti, the University Baroque Ensemble and the vocal ensemble Les Canards Chantants each give a flavour of the “new” music that they might have encountered on their travels.

Starting at 10.30am with instrumental music from Paris by Charpentier, Couperin and Rameau, the tour moves to London at 1pm for music by Purcell and Handel.

Madrigals from Venice by Monteverdi, Banchiero and Gabrieli are to be heard at 3.30pm and the journey finishes at 7pm in Leipzig, with works by J S Bach and Telemann.

Tickets cost £40, concessions £34, for all four concerts or £12 or £10 for individual concerts on 01904 322439 or 01904 658338.
