New Mill Male Voice Choir will sing at York Minster in aid of York Against Cancer on Saturday night.
“We’ve worked with this charity in the past and when we decided to approach the Minster about staging a concert, York Against Cancer seemed an obvious partner,” says choir member Steve Flynn.
“We’re delighted to support such a worthwhile local cause and hope that a large audience will turn out to raise much needed funds. “The choir and our two soloists, sopranos Sarah Ogden and Stephanie Ball, have worked hard in rehearsal for many months and we know that this concert will be worthy of the spectacular environment it will be heard in.”
Julie Barnie, York Against Cancer’s general manager, enthuses: “Working with New Mill on this fundraising event has been a pleasure. I’m confident we’re in for a brilliant evening of entertainment in a very special venue”. The choir was founded in 1991 in the small West Yorkshire village of New Mill, near Holmfirth, when 12 singers gathered in the local hostelry. Two years later and with three times more members, the choir sang as part of the World Choir at Cardiff Arms Park, and by 1997 they had recorded their first CD.
The choir now boasts a vocal force of more than 60 that will present a 7.30pm programme ranging from Gershwin and Jerome Kern to barbershop and spirituals, while also travelling the globe with songs from South Africa, the United States, Italy, Ireland, Germany, France and Britain.
Tickets are available at £15, £12 and £8 on 0844 939 0015.
