WAKEFIELD Jazz brings its summer season to a hard-hitting climax tonight with the Nick Svrac Trio. Nick is a guitarist in the Jon Scofield style.

The autumn series begins in September and early booking is recommended for the Tommy Smith Quartet on October 7 (01924 253202).

Jazz In The Spa brings an exciting combo to the club tomorrow night, Keith Stephen’s Hot Club Trio, with Caroline Irwin and Mike Pigott. Guitar maestros Keith and Roly Veitch, are joined by Caroline (vocals) and Mike Piggot’s violin (01937 842636).

Sunday is a quality jazz day in York, with Brazilian pianist Zezo Olimpio and his Trio at Kennedy’s Café Bar, Little Stonegate, at 1pm (01904 620222), and the Ian Chalk Quartet at the Phoenix, George Street, at 8.30pm (01904 656401). Close by, and overlapping the Phoenix a little, Karl Mullen (piano) and Jen Low (vocals) will be at the Spread Eagle, Walmgate from 7pm to 10pm on Sunday.

The Phoenix hosts the celebrated jam session on Wednesday with Chris Moore (piano) and James Lancaster (trumpet) providing a public stage for budding musicians and singers.

Now in their fourth year, the First Tuesday Jazz Suppers at the Dean Court Hotel, Duncombe Place, York, will be back on Tuesday at 7.30pm with the Andy Hillier Jazz Trio (01904 625082).

General manager David Brooks shares credit with Andy for the popularity of the Jazz Suppers in the classy Court Café-Bistro and his example has been followed by other York hotels. He plans to introduce guest trios into the mix. “The success of the evenings has been significantly due to Andy Hillier’s popularity,” said David. “He will appear on several First Tuesdays throughout the year, but he deserves a break now and again. Quarterly guest trios and musicians will be an extra treat for Jazz Supper diners.”

Frank Brooker’s Trio will be the guests on August 2.

Also on Tuesday, Encouraging the Loony, the wackily hilarious duo of pianist Karl Mullen and drummer Neil Scott (01904 654307), are at the Victoria Vaults, Nunnery Lane.

Scarborough Jazz runs on Wednesday nights at The Cask, Cambridge Terrace (01723 500570), and next week’s guests will be the Jamie Toms Quintet. It is encouraging to see young twenty-somethings carrying the jazz torch with the music of Michael Brecker, Pat Metheny, Don Grolnick and more.

The Old White Swan, Goodramgate, has hosted Thursday live jazz for more than 16 years, with the Mardi Gras Band alternating with Bejazzled and Mike Riley. Next Thursday will be Mardi Gras night (01904 540911).

Mystery man with the band is the Invisible Guitarist, Trevor Holroyd, who travels from far-distant Barnsley. In his alter-ego as a talented keyboard player, Trevor leads various trios with female vocalists in the quality hotels of West Yorkshire. The soul of modesty, hiding his light behind any available bushel, Trevor’s CV takes in playing with many American bands, countless TV and radio broadcasts and composition credits for plays written and produced by his close friend Alan Ayckbourn.

Ayckbourn’s early career was as a producer for BBC Leeds and he invariably called upon Trevor to compose and play original music for his productions.

Trevor was also commissioned to compose the signature tune for the first Look North TV news programme. Incredibly, he also finds the time to be an architect and was a lecturer for many years at the Leeds School of Architecture.
