TIMELESS melodies are somehow back in fashion. In the UK at least, for while the US leg of this tour has been cancelled due to low ticket sales, a throng of enthused 20-somethings clustered in Fibbers for this re-arranged show.
Jonny is a vehicle for Euros Childs, wide-eyed Welsh popstrel and Norman Blake, front man for the most revered Teenage Fanclub.
Their best material harks back to another, halcyon age of shimmering tunes and wistful thoughts, exemplified by the wonderful Candyfloss – probably the best single of 2011. Childs and Blake, with their band, including talented (if too close for comfort to current folk queen), support act Laura J Martin on flute, had an unforced air which complemented the air of bonhomie.
While the self-titled album spends too much time in Only Fools And Horses-style pub rock, live, songs like Bread and Wich Is Wich made more sense, and at less than two minutes apiece never outstayed their welcome. Jonny make no attempt to disguise their influences, and the imprint of The Beatles and Joe Meek’s Telstar-driven pop were never far from the surface. Blake gives more substance to Child's naïf keyboard creations, last seen by this reviewer in York supporting the Dodos back in 2008.
In lesser hands, this project could easily have descended into the sort of drivel recorded by wasted rock stars and their friends in the mid 70s, but instead their obvious love of the music translated into a warm feelgood evening – with some of the loveliest melodies Fibbers will hear for some time to come.
