YORK violinist Phillip Mindenhall, musical director Martin Hewitt and narrator Maria Billington present The Max Jaffa Story at the Scarborough Library Concert Hall, Vernon Road, Scarborough, next Thursday at 12.30pm.
The one-hour show forms the Vincent Billington Memorial Concert, part of the 2012 Scarborough Literary Festival.
Written by the late Mr Billington, The Max Jaffa Story pays tribute to the legendary violinist in the centenary year of his birth and of the founding of the Scarborough Spa Orchestra, the last remaining one of its type in Great Britain.
Max Jaffa graced the Scarborough Spa and the BBC airwaves for many years and Mr Billington was his pianist for 12 years at the Spa and on his multitude of BBC broadcasts. They also travelled the world together.
“By the time Max arrived on the Scarborough music scene, he had established himself on radio and TV as a highly popular and charismatic performer,” says Mr Mindenhall.
“I recall with nostalgia the great time during the 1970s when I enjoyed performing with the Spa Orchestra, directed by such an iconic musician as Max.”
At next Thursday’s event, Maria Billington will narrate Max Jaffa’s life story, interspersed with violin solos by Mr Mindenhall, accompanied by pianist Frances Brock.
“In our programme, you will hear many of Max Jaffa’s beautiful solos and the music the Spa Orchestra would have played in his time, though it represents only a fraction of the diverse range of music Max presented in both solo and orchestral arrangements,” says Mr Mindenhall.
Entry is by donation at the door.
