HOW long will you have to wait for The View’s new album? A week longer than first announced, is the answer, but Cheeky For A Reason definitely will be out on July 9, the same date as new download single How Long.

The first chance for Yorkshire fans to hear songs from the Dundee band’s fourth studio set, and their first for Cooking Vinyl, comes next week at gigs at The Cockpit in Leeds on Tuesday, The Welly in Hull on Wednesday and The Duchess in York on Thursday.

“We always like to do this when we’ve done a new album, going out on a tour of not-so-massive venues,” says lead singer and guitarist Kyle Falconer, whose 20-date June and July itinerary will be followed by a second British tour later this year.

The View went into the studio in February, recording songs over six weeks with Arctic Monkeys, Razorlight and Foals producer Mike Crossey at his Motor Museum Studios in Liverpool.

“We’ve recorded there quite a lot and we like the equipment that Mike has there,” says Kyle. “He was supposed to be doing our last album too; he’d done the pre-production but the record company wanted us to have a bigger sound, so we worked with Youth instead.”

Whereas their Mercury-nominated 2007 debut, Hats Off To The Buskers, topped the charts and 2009’s Which Bitch went Top Ten, 2011’s Bread & Circuses made only the Top 20. “We got dropped by Columbia after the third album,” says Kyle, explaining the reasoning behind the move to pop pastures new.

“And we were happy to leave because we felt they never did that album justice. People didn’t know it was out, apart from our biggest fans.

“It was Columbia’s option to re-sign us or not, but we were glad to join Cooking Vinyl. The Enemy had already joined the label and we’ve always been close to them.”

Under the agreement with Cooking Vinyl, the label are distributing and marketing the album after The View paid for their own recording sessions. “We get a bigger profit from sales this way,” says Kyle, reflecting on a partnership that is in keeping with the realities of the record industry in more straitened times.

Never mind the business side, what about Cheeky For A Reason’s 12 sprightly tracks? “This album is Fleetwood Mac’s Rumours done by The Clash,” says Kyle.

“No-one in the band would complain about those comparisons as we have lots of contrasting tastes – the drummer loves heavy metal!”

Making their fourth album has been a new beginning for The View. “It feels like getting back to basics, whereas before we would stick strings on, which was brilliant, but I’m old fashioned in my music,” says Kyle.

“The Clash, the rock’n’roll scene, was the inspiration for our first album, but I was always a fan of Fleetwood Mac’s harmonies too, so I think putting those great melodies and licks with heavy guitar sounds great.

“It’s no good to completely change but we do want development.”

Part of that development has involved Kyle and bassist Kieran Webster co-writing three tracks – Hold On Now, Bullet and The Clock – with Angelo Petraglia, writer, producer and unofficial fifth member of Kings Of Leon.

“Carly Connor, who’d been on tour with us, had been going across to the US to write with him, so we went over to Nashville for a couple of weeks, initially just to meet, as we’d never worked like that before, but we got three songs out of it, with anyone bringing to the table whatever they wanted,” says a delighted Kyle.

Cheeky by nature, The View have chosen the perfect album title for next month’s release. “People say we’re cheeky – but it’s also a lyric in one of our songs that ‘we might be cheeky for a reason’,” says Kyle.

“It doesn’t annoy me that people think we’re cheeky. We are cheeky for a reason – because we’re Dundonians – so I don’t mind it at all!”
