HARROGATE Symphony Orchestra has revealed the popular classics that have made it on to its summer concert programme a public vote.
“Our ‘You Choose’ competition received hundreds of entries and produced some surprising results, as well as some more traditional selections,” says conductor Bryan Western.
The Saturday HSO’s Summer Concert will be held on Saturday at 7.30pm at Harrogate Royal Hall and features Mendelssohn’s Hebrides Overture (Fingal’s Cave), Finlandia by Sibelius, Smetana’s Vltava, In The Steppes Of Central Asia by Borodin and the Tchaikovsky double bill of his 1812 Overture and extracts from Swan Lake.
“The highlight of the evening will be the Rachmaninov’s Piano Concerto No 2 performed by pianist Julian Saphir on a Shigeru Kawai Concert Grand,” says Bryan.
“We’re delighted to be performing a concert programme chosen by the audience and we hope by playing some of the Harrogate district’s favourite music we’ll also encourage new people to come along and give classical music a try.”
The orchestra has enlisted the support of Harrogate-born actor and director Hugo Speer to promote its events to new and existing audiences. He attended the HSO’s sold-out March concert and hopes to be present on Saturday too.
“It promises to be a fantastic event with some incredible music and a little bit of something for everyone,” says Bryan.
