Held over three days inside and outside the stately Elizabethan Hall, this feast of fine music covers funk, traditional jazz, hard blues, dreamy vocals and everything in between, but move fast, because the last few tickets may still be available online at burtonagnes.com
The first session is on next Friday at 6pm and continues with a late-night session sponsored by the Beverley Arts Trust.
Saturday begins at 1pm with the Lemon Monkeys (Matt Smith and Carlos Olmos), the Zoe Gilbey Quartet and a Horace Silver tribute from the Give A Little Love Jazz Orchestra. The big name on Saturday will be Stacey Kent at 6.30pm and the late-night session features the Mississippi Mudbloods.
Sunday maintains a high profile with the Rob Law/Tom Whitworth Quartet, Tribute to Atlantic Jazz and Sean Taylor. The day is rounded off by York’s own Ben Beattie’s Jazz Essentials, plus festival organiser Simon Cunliffe-Lister on saxophone at 3.15pm. New young faces continue to appear on the wacky and wonderful jazz scene and the Wakefield Jazz final presentation of the summer Green Shoots festival is tonight at 8pm. The aim is to promote promising new musicians with great bands from our region. Tonight it’s the award-winning Tom Thorp’s Mercury Quartet (01977 680542).
Jazz in the Spa presents the more mature end of the musical spectrum tomorrow night with traditional jazz from Chris Pearce’s Frenchman Street Jazz band (01937 842544). The Trustees Hall venue, Boston Spa, is not licensed so take your own tipple.
The York One Wold Linking Association will hold a benefit concert tomorrow night at the English Martyrs Church Hall at 7.30pm. In a programme of varied music, the jazz will come from Jazz Jerome’s; info from (01904) 655380.
The concept of Sunday as a day of rest seems to have eluded local jazz musicians and your Sunday jazz begins at 1pm with the Zero Olympia Trio at Kennedy’s Café Bar, Little Stone gate (01904 620222). Ian Chalk’s Quartet takes on the jazz baton at 8.30pm at the Phoenix Inn, George Street, York.

Belated congratulations to James Lancaster’s New Orleans-tinged New York Brass Band which won the York Bestial celebrations over the Diamond Jubilee weekend.
