York Stage Musicals present the Yorkshire amateur premiere of Stepping Out The Musical at the Joseph Rowntree Theatre, York, from Wednesday to Saturday.
The show is based on Richard Harris's award winning play and the spin-off 1991 film that starred Liza Minnelli, Shelley Winters and Julie Walters.
Harris provides the book, Mary Stewart-David, the lyrics, and Denis King, the music for the warmly amusing musical play about the lives and loves of nine women and one man who attend a weekly tap-dancing class.
Under the charge of former professional dancer Mavis (played by Marie Louise Scott) are bubbly Sylvia (Sara Collier-Hield); nervous Andy (Carol Hill); snobbish but well meaning Vera (Sandy Nicholson); confident and attractive Maxine (Sarah Barker); plain, fat Lynne (Verity Carr); anxious Dorothy (Mandy Oxley); bundle of fun Rose (Claire Walker) and, last but not least, Geoffrey (John Hall), the lone widowed male.
Accompanied on the piano by the lugubrious Mrs Fraser (Brenda Riley), the tappers start to conquer their inhibitions and improve. So much so, the finale is a big, glitzy tap routine, sure to have you up on your feet cheering.
Next week's show is directed by Gilly Adam with musical direction by Ish Herd and choreography by Verity Carr.
Evening performances on October 25 to 28 start at 7.30pm, complemented by a 2.30pm matinee next Saturday. Box office: 0870 770 5741.
