AS the centrepiece of York 800’s Charter Day, York’s biggest ever choral event will take to the streets on Monday evening.
To mark 800 years to the day since the city received its Royal Charter from King John, Ebor Vox – The Voice of York – will involve hundreds of singers from 20 choirs and hundreds of schoolchildren performing This York, a new piece by Benjamin Till specially composed for the event.
This award-winning composer is best known for his BBC Symphony For Yorkshire in 2010. His latest Yorkshire piece has involved him setting to music lyrics written in an open poetry competition earlier this year.
On Monday, the choirs will process through the city centre, leaving York Minster at 6pm and arriving at the Eye of York at around 6.30pm.
Accompanied by the Shepherd Group Brass Band, dancers and giant puppets, they will perform Till’s joyful anthem under the direction of artistic director Stephen Burke.
• Ebor Vox, York city centre, Monday, from 6pm
