WRITER and performance-storyteller Sally Pomme Clayton takes a long, hard look at love in Eros & Psyche in the York Theatre Royal Studio tomorrow at 7.45pm.
Merging myth, fairytale and raucous Greek philosophy, the Crick Crack Club’s touring show invites Aphrodite, Eros and Socrates to gather under one roof and let the battle of hearts and minds begin.
“This show draws on some hefty mythological and philosophical substance and speaks to anyone who has ever loved, envied or doubted,” says Sally.
The story of Eros (better known as Cupid) and Psyche is widespread, whether as classical myth, allegory or fairytale. Aphrodite expects to be worshipped when it comes to all things amorous, so when the beautiful mortal Psyche begins to attract too much attention, she sends Eros with a quiver full of arrows and ill-intent to seek revenge, but in a comic twist he falls in love with her himself.
Eros & Psyche combines classical mythical romance with Plato’s Symposium in Sally’s raunchy performance of spoken word and sound. “The show questions our ideas of beauty, suffering and the choice to live,” she says.
