YORK choreographer, Royal Ballet School member and former professional dancer Evelyn Witcombe will present her students in Tip Top Dance at the Joseph Rowntree Theatre, York, from May 9 to 11.

At Evelyn’s last count, 78 dancers will be taking part in her display of myriad forms of dance, including classical ballet, jazz and tap, taught at her classes at St Andrew’s Hall in Huntington.

Picking out highlights from the 36 items, Evelyn selects the first half-closing Irish Dance Scene, which will feature the nine and ten-year-old Bluebells dancers alongside the Panache seniors for the first time; the second half-opening Windmills Of Your Mind, danced on points; and the Trendsetters’ routine from Cabaret with chairs.

Evelyn also draws your attention to Panache’s Dem Bones, a skeleton dance performed in ultraviolet lighting; the Starlets, alias “the tiny ones” aged three to five, dancing When I See An Elephant Fly; the Jetsetters’ Skinny Love; and the Bluebells’ tap routine, Thank Heavens.

York musician Steve Cassidy will sing Ugly Duckling to his guitar accompaniment for the Starlets, who in turn will dance Ugly Duckling at Steve’s own show with his band at the Rowntree Theatre on May 19.

He and Evelyn promise Just A Bit Of Fun in the second half of Tip Top Dance when she will dance to his guitar rendition of Mack The Knife.

Tickets for the 7.15pm performances cost £10, concessions £9 for Thursday only, on 01904 623568 or from the Theatre Royal box office. Proceeds will go to the refurbishment of the St Andrew’s Church building in York and a donation will be made to Stroke Research too.

Meanwhile, two of Evelyn’s former pupils, Fern Grimbley and Joseph Poulton, are continuing their upward trajectory.

Fern is training with the Northern Contemporary School of Dance and has auditioned successfully to tour with the Sadlers Wells National Youth Dance Company this summer, while Joseph, now a professional dancer, is touring in the musical Cats.

Andrew Lloyd Webber’s musical will be in Hull from May 6 to 18 at the New Theatre (box office, 01482 300300 or hullcc.gov.uk/hullnewtheatre).
