ANTLER Theatre brought an exciting and imaginative piece of theatre to York with Where the White Stops last Friday night.
Combining storytelling and physical theatre, four actors told the tale of Crab, a young girl who sets out from the safety of her village in search of the unknown: to find where the white stops.
Bundled up in sheepskin coats and fluffy boots, the cast utilised lighting, sound and props to their maximum effect, as they transformed the blank, square stage into treacherous blizzards, bleak open spaces and sheltering caves, often with comic effect. A hand-held fan created a gust of wind, whilst a flutter of white paper embodied a puff of snow.
At other moments, the acting was incredibly touching and the cast’s ability to switch so swiftly between comedy and pathos was impressive.
Flawless transitions led Crab and her multi role-playing crew through wind, snow, grief and laughter in this punchy, energetic and innovative performance.
All sound was created on stage by the cast, and the harmonious song of the four voices worked perfectly. The a cappella created by the four actors during the travelling scenes was most striking.
Engaging and enjoyable from start to finish, this 75-minute play was a really beautiful piece of devised theatre from a unique theatre company. A fantastic show.
