TO all those who say theatre is not for them, here is the counter: a show for anyone who has felt like an outsider.
Out Of Character Theatre Company was formed out of the Converge project run jointly by York St John University and the York mental health services, set up by theatre-as-therapy lecturer Dr Nick Rowe and NHS-funded education support worker Gemma Aldred.
Its participants, aged from their late-20s to mid-1950s, all use the aforementioned services, uniting in theatre where previously they may have felt marginalised or excluded in society.
Five of the original cast from 2010's Tales From Kafka remain in the company of 14 run by Paul Birch, and once again Out Of Character have linked up with York Theatre Royal associate director Juliet Forster for More Tales From Kafka, the new version extended from 50 to 70 minutes.
As previously, Forster has devised the script from sessions with the company members, drawing on their own experiences in response to the disturbed, paranoid writings of Czech novelist Franz Kafka, and the play's series of vignettes weaves the two together, guided by Mark Gowland's Storyteller, who book-ends the progress from daybreak to night.
Tremendous in the lead role, Christian Foster's ever-rushing Joseph K sheds ever more clothes, caught in a world between dreams and reality, pursued by the silhouette of a beetle in the show's most visually striking moment.
Issues of self-worth, anxiety, body image, public and private space, relationships, hopes fears, mortality and more besides bubble to the surface, and both individual and ensemble performances feed off these subjects in the striking physicality of their performances.
Robin Crowe makes an impact, whether playing Bendermann or a dog, so too does Brian Borthwick's Gentleman, while Christie Barnes, Ros Church and Emma Weston all make powerful contributions, especially in scenes together.
This is one of the most fruitful, beneficial theatre projects in York, not only for the performers, but the audience too.
More Tales From Kakfa, Out Of Character Theatre Company, York Theatre Royal Studio, tonight at 7.45pm. Box office: 01904 623568 or yorktheatreroyal.co.uk
