The first theatre tour of Danny The Champion Of The World visits the Grand Opera House, York from May 15 to 18, when one special boy fights to foil the plans of the nastiest man in the district.

First published in 1975, Roald Dahl's tale relates the story of Danny, a young boy who lives in a caravan with the most marvellous and exciting Dad any boy ever had.

However, his father has a secret.

When night comes, he poaches pheasants from Hazell's Wood.

Mr Hazell wants to evict them both and the battle is on to save their home, but how can one boy defeat a rich and powerful landowner? Danny has a plan, and soon he and his Dad are caught up in a thrilling adventure, adapted for the stage by David Wood, the doyen of writers for children's theatre.

The tour is being mounted by Birmingham Stage Company, which has staged five Roald Dhal shows in the past 14 years. This time, the company is working in conjunction with the Sherman Theatre, Cardiff.

Performances start at 1.30pm and 7pm on May 15; 10.30am and 1.30pm, May 16; 10.30am and 7pm, May 17 and 18. Tickets cost £10 to £14.50 on 0870 606 3595.
