PROMPTED by a sold-out tour of home soil last June, Badapple Theatre Company will revive its production of The Land Girls Of Yorkshire for a nationwide itinerary this spring.

The Green Hammerton company will play to 60 halls during April, May and June in a show that honours the women who served their country working on the land in God’s own country during the Second World War.

Writer Kate Bramley collected stories of former Women’s Land Army volunteers from across Yorkshire as inspiration for her play: a humorous account of the journey of two young women who volunteer to work for the Land Army.

Buff is a city girl with dreams of being “just like Vera Lynn”, Biddy is a country girl who is a hopeless romantic, and together they are bonded by blisters, back ache and banter as they learn all there is to know about toiling on the land.

Bolstered by a Lottery grant from Awards for All, Badapple is touring the show as part of its innovative Theatre On Your Doorstep programme. “We call it doorstep theatre because this is a chance for local people to enjoy professional theatre right on their doorstep and have a drink – either tea or stronger – and a laugh among friends close to home,” says Kate, who describes her play as a family show with plenty of good humour and music, suitable for all ages but ideally upwards of ten years old.

“We’re delighted that the support from the Lottery has enabled us to reach further into communities and create a new show based on the reminiscences of local Land Army girls, and now, thanks to the success of the 2009 pilot shows, we’re out on tour for two and a half months this year! We’re overwhelmed by the wealth of support for this project right across the country.”
