Billy Elliot The Musical has become the fastest-selling York Stage Musicals show so far.
Director Robert Readman is presenting Lee Hall and Sir Elton John’s musical at the Grand Opera House, York, from June 7 to 12 as part of the Billy Youth Theatre project to mark five years of Billy in the West End.
Based on Stephen Daldry’s film, the show is an inspirational story of one North Eastern boy’s dream to realise his dancing ambitions as his family struggles in the heat of the 1984/85 miners’ strike. Readman’s cast is led by Henry Rhodes as Billy, Josh Benson as Billy’s best friend Michael, Alex Papachristou as Billy’s Dad and Jane Houghton as dance teacher Mrs Wilkinson. George Stagnell takes the role of Billy’s elder brother Tony, Kiera Leaper is Debbie and Chrissy Thorpe hunts for her elusive pasty as Billy’s Grandma. Oliver Tattersfield is miner Big Davey and Luke Dunford tries to teach Billy how to fight as boxing coach George.
Readman’s production will be using London flying specialists Flying By Foy to stage the Swan Lake sequence featuring Will Gosnold as Older Billy.
