A NEW stage in the round will set the scene for the latest season at the York Theatre Royal.

The seven-month long In The Round Ensemble Season will feature performances produced solely by the theatre and set on a stage surrounded by the audience. A production of The Crucible, Arthur Miller’s dramatic play set in the time of the Salem Witch Trial, will be the first play on the stage. It opens tomorrow and runs until May 28.

Juliet Forster, York Theatre Royal’s associate director, said: “There are certain plays that lend themselves to being performed in the round. They need the intimacy of the space, a place for actors and audience to become wholly involved with the action. Our In The Round Ensemble Season has allowed us to choose plays that we have always wanted to do, that perhaps wouldn’t have the same impact in the traditional proscenium arch stage that the Theatre Royal has.”
