TUCKED away behind Goodramgate, Holy Trinity Church is a haven of tranquillity. But once it was at the centre of a bustling community.
Now a York-based performance group, ReStage, hopes to bring to life some of these generations of lost people who lived in its shadow.
The company’s show, Hidden Voices, aims to be a dramatic evocation of 1,000 years of York history.
It wonders if a rich medieval merchant could buy his way into heaven, what was it like to listen to a Puritan sermon at the time of the Civil War and what would have brought Charles II’s housekeeper to the church.
Director Chris Green says: “There are so many human stories hidden away under the many layers of York’s long history. “What we aim to do is to drill down into those layers to reveal some of the detail of those lost lives. The show is based on many original sources and we have uncovered a lot that will be new to many people.”
The semi-promenade performance lasts about 75 minutes and is at Holy Trinity, Goodramgate, York, from June 23 to 25, at 7.30pm.
