CHOREOGRAPHER and director Jacky Lansley brings her latest dance work, Guest Suites, to York Minster’s octagonal Chapter House tomorrow night.

Billed as a “study in crystalline form”, this British premiere is being presented in three very different spaces: the airy Clore Studio Upstairs at the Royal Opera House in London last month and the industrial Barbican Theatre in Plymouth later this month, as well as the Chapter House in between.

Guest Suites is inspired by Bach’s Cello Suites for unaccompanied cello. Lansley and her frequent collaborator, composer Jonathan Eato, use Bach’s form of six dances in six suites as an artistic template.

“The formal beauty of Bach’s Cello Suites provides an intriguing emotional and structural world for the work,” says the choreographer.

“The suites remain an artistic touchstone, not just for musicians, but also for all artists, and suggest an aesthetic that remains radical in its simplicity and structure. I’m looking for the space for innovation within them.”

The first three Bach Cello Suites will be performed live by cellist Audrey Riley and on an historic recording by Pablo Casals. Eato’s contemporary addition, Suite Inserts, a “compositional reworking” of four movements for cello and electronics, will be performed by Riley and, on laptop, by Eato himself.

Central to Guest Suites is the idea of artists guesting in each other’s worlds. Consequently, within her choreographic landscape, Lansley brings together dancers Tim Taylor, Ayano Honda, Fergus Early, Polly Motley and actor Vincent Ebrahim.

Tickets for tomorrow’s 7.30pm performance cost £15 or £13 on 0844 939 0015 or online at boxoffice.yorkminster.org
