COUNTRY queen Dolly Parton’s brand spankin’ new stage show, 9 To 5: The Musical, will play York next year on its first national tour.
The musical comedy spin-off from Colin Higgins’s 1980 film will visit the Grand Opera House from February 4 to 9 with its story of friendship, gossip, poison, murder and girls having all the fun.
Tickets go on sale on Monday at 10am at £15 to £35 on 0844 871 3024 or online at atgtickets.com/york
Dolly, who played Doralee Rhodes in the movie alongside Lily Tomlin and Jane Fonda, will not be appearing in the musical – casting will be announced soon online at 9to5themusical.co.uk – but she has sent this message to her fans.
“I am so excited that 9 To 5: The Musical is coming to Britain. I’m hoping you have as much fun watching it as I had writing the music for it,” she says.
“9 To 5: The Musical is perfect for anyone that’s ever wanted to string up their boss, which is almost all of us. So come join the fun.”
Howard Panter, joint chief executive of the Ambassador Theatre Group, owner of the Grand Opera House, is mounting the tour that will start at Manchester Opera House on October 12.
“A hugely entertaining film has been turned in to a musical rollercoaster of delight,” he says. “Dolly Parton is a true global icon and her signature music will be an instant hit with musical theatre fans. This sharp, witty musical adventure is one of the most exciting new musicals to be hitting the UK stage”.
Written by Patricia Resnick, with music and lyrics by Dolly Parton, 9 To 5: The Musical centres on three female office workers: Judy, Violet and Doralee, who turn the tables on their bigot of a boss, Franklin M Hart Jr.
The score will feature 18 original Dolly numbers, including the inevitable 9 To 5 and songs from her most recent albums, Backwoods Barbie and Better Day.
