DAVID Goodwin and Jonathan Lewis perform Not About Heroes, Stephen MacDonald's depiction of the intimate bond between First World War soldier-poets Siegfried Sassoon and Wilfred Owen, at Helmsley Arts Centre tonight and tomorrow.
This two-hander recalls their first meeting in Edinburgh's Craiglockhart Hospital, where Owen was sent to recover from nervous shock and Sassoon to silence his anti-war views.
Their relationship became crucial to Owen's development as a poet and indeed they collaborated on his most famous work, Anthem For Doomed Youth.
In Not About Heroes, the tragedy of both men's situation is bought to the fore as Sassoon and Owen go back to the front, but only one would return (Owen was shot one week before the armistice).
The 1812 production marks the newly slim-line Goodwin's return to the role of Sassoon, having first played him in 1991 at the Beck Theatre in London.
Post Helmsley, the play visits Pickering Friends Meeting House on Wednesday (01751 472847).
Terrington Village Hall, Thursday, 01653 648328; Galtres Centre, Easingwold, next Friday, 01347 822472; Georgian Theatre Royal, Richmond, next Saturday, 01748 825252. All shows start at 7.30pm. Helmsley tickets cost £8, concessions £7, on 01439 771700.
