Published on 29/11/2022

CARR-HILL Professor Roy Alexander Professor Roy Alexander Carr-Hill was born on 29th August 1943 in Widnes, England, the third child of his parents. Roy has been married twice. He leaves behind his wife, his 4 daughters, 7 grandchildren, and his two brothers and their families. He left us suddenly on Monday 21st November 2022. He will be remembered for his incessant doggedness with his research and numerous scholarly publications on health and educational inequalities, and his love of all things good in life. We will be celebrating his life on 9th December at 1.40pm at York Crematorium, Bishopthorpe at the White Rose Chapel and afterwards for the wake at The Woodman pub (16 Main St, Bishopthorpe YO23 2RB). We would like to ask those joining us on the day to bring something pink to celebrate Roy's life. We will also be creating a book to remember him by, and we would really appreciate any contributions. If you would like to be part of this, please bring a written memory with you on the day and / or photo(s), or if you cannot come on the 9th feel free to send us your contribution.

My condolences to Roy's wife, family and friends.

I first met Roy at the Institute of Education and was immediately taken with his open approach to education concerns and his questioning of preconceived ideas. I met and worked with Roy on many occasions since then and he was always most welcoming, engaging and thought-provoking.

I smiled at the request 'to bring something pink to celebrate Roy's life' as I recalled the time he visited Vanuatu to work with the Ministry of Education. He introduced himself to the receptionist wearing a bright pink T-shirt embossed with a multi-coloured fish. She was disbelieving, thinking he was joking with her. He persisted and eventually she accepted that he was the consultant they were expecting. She apologised, saying 'Sorry, I thought you were a fisherman'.

I will always remember Roy as a larger-than-life character, as an invaluable mentor and as a friend. He will be sadly missed.

Condolences to Roy's family and friends. I was his secretary at the Centre for Health Economics before he retired. He was the biggest character I've ever worked with and will always be remembered.
Kind regards, Linda Baillie.
