STIRK Frederick (Ron) Passed away peacefully in York Hospital on 15th February 2024 aged 92 years. He will be sadly missed by all that knew him. The family would like to invite anyone wanting to attend a graveside service at St Stephens Church in Acomb, York on Wednesday 20th March at 12.00. I was sorry to hear of Ron's death, and I am just as sorry that work keeps me away from his funeral tomorrow, I was trying to arrange things to come along.
I first met Ron when I joined RKL at Fairbank House, not long after RKL merged with Fairbank and Sons, we shared an office for most of my time at York. I learnt a great deal from him. I was a green graduate engineer and the amount of information that he could lay his hands on, or use, was not insignificant.
we worked on drawing boards. When Ron needed thinking time he would reach for his pipe, empty it, find his tobacco, pull a little out, fill the pipe sort out the bowl and place the tobacco in it to the right compactness, light it, take two puffs and lay his pipe down again as he had sorted the problem in his head. it was wonderful to see.
He taught me a lot about working with the farming fraternity and IDBs and was a friend, although we lost touch once I move to the IDBs and then to Lincolnshire where I now live and work.
He has left his mark all around York, and further afield, and many places are much better for his passing through.
