CHAPPELL Mavis Slipped away from us on Friday, May 31st, 2019, in York Hospital. She was born on August 23rd, 1929 in York, daughter to Arthur and Lucy Rushton. Mavis ("Mam", "Nanna", "Big Nanna") was a wife, a mother, a grandmother, a great-grandmother, a sister, an auntie, a friend and a special mother-in-law for many years. Mavis had an overwhelming love for her family and was a constant in all our lives, a beloved and affectionate, funny and kind woman. She had an infectious laugh and welcomed us all into her home with a hug and a kiss. There was always a cuppa and a chocolate biscuit (or Rowntree's' chocolate "waste", if you were lucky) to greet you upon arrival. Mavis was preceded in death by her husband of 43 years, Leonard (Len) Chappell, and by her sister, Pam, who passed away 4 weeks earlier than Mavis. She is survived and missed by her four sons, Anthony, Colin, Barry and Graham and her brother Dave; plus her 11 grandchildren, Louisa, Paul, Adam, Matthew, Daniel, Jethro, Amanda, Robin, Mark, Lennon, and Paula; and her 24 great-grandchildren. She also leaves behind many extended family members and friends who will miss her greatly. There is now an emptiness in our hearts that we will do our best to fill by remembering and celebrating her kindness, her spirit, her sense of humour, and her tenacity in life. A funeral was held on June 24th, at 2:20pm, at the York Crematorium. A post-funeral gathering took place at the Marcia pub in Bishopthorpe, York. It was a great celebration of her life and it also gave everyone time to remember Len. Mavis's ashes will be spread in the same beautiful place as Len's in the grounds of York Crematorium. A plaque will be sited on a special bench at Redwood Park fishery, in joint commemoration of Mavis and Len. As Mavis would have said "Love You".
