THE Lord Mayor of York planted a Royal Oak tree in his own ward of New Earswick to mark the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee.
The sapling, grown from an acorn gathered from a royal estate, was planted on Willow Bank on Saturday by Coun Keith Hyman.
The tree was planted along with 420 copse trees, following a successful bid to the Woodland Trust’s Jubilee Woods project by the local community and partners.
The bid, which was supported by the Joseph Rowntree Housing Trust and the Good Life Initiative, was for trees, including hawthorn, rowan, dogwood, hazel, silver birch and wild cherry.
