IS THERE any wonder people don’t want to use the First buses in York?
Recently, I waited in the bitterly cold wind with several other people at Exhibition Square for a number 6 bus to Clifton Moor.
I was there from 6.55pm to 8.25pm and there was a young woman at the stop who’d been waiting for the 6.30pm bus which hadn’t turned up. So that was four of the half-hourly buses that hadn’t arrived.
In the meantime, numerous number 1, 2 and 5 buses went past and one number 6 in the opposite direction. So where were all the number 6s – had they taken the service off?
I rang the bus office to find out but the controller was apparently ‘out of the office’. The young woman said she’d call me back but never did.
I asked the driver of a number 5 if he knew anything – he didn’t but reluctantly called the control room on his radio.
He told me they’d ‘make a couple of phone calls’. By this time I was frozen through and very fed up so I gave up in disgust and shared a taxi home with another fed-up would-be bus passenger.
