THE Letters page of February 2 asked if the railways had had their day.

While I may agree with RS Scruton when he says communication technology is tomorrow and business people won’t have to travel to business meetings to talk, the ordinary members of the public will still want to travel for holidays, see family who live in other parts of the country.

Yes the trains and lines, etc, should be updated but not at the expense of people’s homes and workplaces. Trains and boats and planes will alway be modes of transport until some clever person discovers the secret of Star Trek’s “Beam me up, Scottie” and we are at our destination.
