CITY of York Hockey Club ladies I climbed to fifth in the North League premier division with a 3-0 win at basement side Wigton I.

Returning from a weather-enforced break, City of York were determined not to take victory for granted against an improving Wigton team.

York enjoyed a lot of possession in the early stages and eventually made the breakthrough when Sam Binns fired home from their first penalty corner of the match.

York then took control, creating chances and breaking through Wigton’s defence, although the home side’s ’keeper ensured it remained 1-0 at the break.

Wigton’s defensive efforts saw them grow in confidence in the second half, but York soaked up any pressure and begun to go on the offensive.

Despite winning several penalty corners, York were unable to force a second goal.

Emily Thorpe eventually created a chance to double the lead when she picked a pass to Kirsty Rossington, who deflected the ball past the ’keeper.

Wigton kept York’s defence on their toes and the visitors were not comfortable until they extended their lead from another penalty corner, with Binns finding Ali Butler on the post and she directed the ball goalwards.

City of York II’s game at home to Leeds II in the Yorkshire League premier division was postponed.

A 3-2 win at Halifax III kept City of York III out in front in division three.

Second-placed Halifax II’s game at Acomb I was postponed and they now trail City by three points but have a game in hand.

City of York IV are second in division five after a 2-1 home victory against Legiolians I. They are five points adrift of leaders Lincoln Roses I, but three points ahead of third-placed Brigg II.

The City of York V promotion push was put on hold in division six Yorkshire as their game at home to Otliensians II was postponed.
