IT can be difficult being quirky without being over the top, but Thao & The Get Down Stay Down have managed it with their third album.

With a style as odd as their name, the band mixes old-time country mountain music with pop and rock guitars, to create a mix of fuzzy, fun tracks. The opening title track is a wonderful, playful fusion of Jack White’s Cold Mountain work and defiant, proud lyrics, while at times, particularly on early track City, there are echoes of Kate Nash, with shouty, distorted vocals.

The Feeling Kind is another playful effort, lazy horns and effect-heavy guitar, with added plodding piano, common in so many Beatles tracks, but with shades of Aimee Mann vocals, while Holy Roller makes the most of Thao Nguyen’s vocals backed with only simple guitars, drums and xylophone. A pleasure to hear, but not an easy album to remember.
