SELBY Indoor Bowls Club put an end to York’s aspirations of a Hebden Challenge Cup place – meaning the Thanet Roaders will be absent for the first time in the competition’s seven-year history.

Selby were 102-63 winners, picking up the maximum 18 points.

Alan Smith’s home rink won all-but four ends to beat Geoff Walker’s side 35-10, and Tony Bryan’s lost 24-23 to Gary Birch’s home side.

In York, Eric Hodgson’s home side had a 17-15 advantage with two to play but lost to Peter Lund’s team, 22-17.

Tex Stevens’ team had a narrow 13-12 lead against Jim Robertson’s team with five ends to play and pulled away to win 21-13.

Selby are now favourites to finish in a coveted top-four place.

New Earswick remain in third place in the Hebden League despite losing 86-72 to leaders North Cave.

Away, Graham Bell’s team had a spectacular 31-12 win, scoring eight shots without reply over the last three ends, though Gary Jones’ rink had a tough time and lost 26-10.

At home, Brian Birch’s side came from 19-14 down with six ends to play to win 24-21, but Gordon Storey’s side lost 27-7.
