TICKETS have gone on sale for a special fundraising event in aid of Marie Curie Cancer Care.
The Sparkling Star Sapphire Ball will be held on July 6 at York Racecourse to celebrate the 65th anniversary of the fundraising group, which was founded in 1948, the same year as the NHS.
The charity, which provides specialist homes for the care of cancer patients, home nursing and raises public awareness, was launched with the donation of an engagement ring, and the very first appeal raised £4,000.
By 1950 the ongoing appeal had raised £30,000 and two years later the Marie Curie Memorial Foundation officially became a charity.
Laura Hambleton, local community fundraiser, said: “Much has changed since the pioneering days of 1948, but the core values have remained constant – putting patients and families first.”
Tickets, including a three- course meal and live music, cost £40 per person, and are available by phoning Laura on 01904 436625 or emailing laura.hambleton@mariecurie.org.uk
To get help from the Marie Curie nursing service, talk to your GP, district nurse or discharge nurse. For details, go to mariecurie.org.uk
