ALL travel costs run up by York’s councillors are to be automatically published online.
Leaders of City of York Council’s political groups have agreed a proposal put forward by council leader James Alexander, which will see a new system introduced where details of all travel for councillors paid for by the authority, regardless of which department footed the bill, will be made publicly available.
The current system only covers costs recorded by the department which provides support for councillors.
Coun Alexander said: “There has been a great deal of interest in travel costs in recent months and the system we are working under is in need of updating.
“Politicians of all parties take council-funded travel to different parts of the country in the business of the council and their roles as councillors.
“I am perfectly happy for the public to scrutinise my travel, which is an essential part of my job.
“I take it from the cross-party agreement that others will be too.”
Confirmation of when and how the expenses will be published will be confirmed shortly.
