Teenager Lewis McCarthy produced the shock singles result of the season as he inflicted Jeff Cohen’s fifth defeat of the campaign in division two of the Northern Powergrid York & District Table Tennis League.

It was the sole point for his RI ‘F’ side as they went down to leaders RI ‘C’.

However, RI ‘C’ were shown no mercy by Dave Rawlings, of Bootham ‘C’, who only lost one game as he remained undefeated, assisting in a doubles success to gain an excellent draw.

Resurgent Shepherds ‘B’ thumped Bootham ‘B’ 8-2, Nathan Taylor and Andy Fletcher too good. The Tories responded with a similar score in their favour against Tramways thanks to Ady McClaren’s fine performance, though Tramways then did well to gain parity with Shepherds ‘A’.

Jonathan Chabry won his singles but received no support as RI ‘D’ crashed 7-3 at Shepherds ‘C’.

Aidan Rantfler was in great form as he won all his singles for Holgate ‘A’ against second-placed RI ‘A’ in division one. Two of his successes were gained by winning the final game 11-9, but it was not enough to stop his side going down narrowly.

RI ‘B’ are close up in third after thumping University ‘A’ 8-2 as Filip Wojtkowiak only dropped one game, while the students were also beaten 7-3 by RI ‘A’, for whom Mick Wilcockson was unbeaten.

Coneysthorpe ‘B’ could only muster two players for their clash at Crescent ‘B’, but Chris Londesbrough maintained his fine season, helping his team to a draw.

Holgate ‘C’ have lost the lead in division three after they were held to a draw by University ‘B’, Tristan Curteis and Michael Holmes both claiming the scalp of Bob Young, who had previously lost only two singles all season.

However, Holgate ‘C’ did edge out BT ‘A’ 6-4, though Howard Broadbent shone for the losers.

Reigning champions Shepherds ‘D’ have gone top, having played a game more, after a whitewash of BT ‘A’, Chris Hutchinson, Paul Kozyra and Mick Surtees triumphant.

Lee Poulter and Rich Collyer led Bootham ‘E’ to an emphatic 9-1 success over relegation-threatened Aviva ‘A’.

Youngster Matt Roberts excelled, but could not prevent his RI ‘G’ side going down narrowly to BT ‘B’.

Thornton-le Clay continue to lead division four, and they whitewashed Bootham ‘G’ before Trevor Percival led them to a hard-earned 8-2 win over RI ‘I’.

Alan Johnson won his singles as Shepherds ‘E’ defeated Bootham ‘G’ 7-3, although for the losers Jason Chinnian dismissed David Atkinson and he also beat Steve Webster in the final game in shock wins.

Aviva ‘B’ overcome a depleted RI ‘J’ 9-1, while Pete Waring saw Holgate ‘E’ to an 8-2 win over RI ‘J’.
