YORK Schoolboys under-13s upset the odds by defeating holders Sheffield in the quarter-finals of the West Yorkshire Cup, writes Dale Harris.

Playing away from home, the York side had to come from behind to beat the current cup kings, setting up a semi-final showdown with Leeds or Barnsley.

York hit the ground running, causing the home side problems with their passing, movement and work rate.

Despite the balance of play, the holders showed their resilience by taking the lead following a deflected shot off York ’keeper Adam Precious.

York showed maturity and composure as they began to dominate again, with shots at goal from Dan Davidson and Lucas Hindle, while Joe Kivington went close with a header.

In spite of all this pressure, the visitors were a goal down at half-time.

In the second period, York picked up from where they left off with early chances from Max Tweddle, who shot just wide, and Davidson again going close, this time drawing a save from the home team’s goalkeeper.

The away side’s equaliser finally came after Marcus Haigh latched onto a cross from Tweddle at the far post.

Haigh was at it again a few minutes later, only this time he was flagged offside following a ball from Zak Lawrence.

With extra time looming, the two in-form boys linked up again as Haigh got on the end of another Tweddle cross to head home and put his side into the last four.

Meanwhile, York U14s let slip a two-goal lead to draw 2-2 at Middlesbrough.

York opened the scoring after seven minutes, with Alex Wilson scrambling the ball home from a corner.

Middlesbrough again struggled to deal with a corner as their centre-back headed into his own net shortly before half-time.

Despite heading towards a comfortable victory, the home side stunned York with two goals in the final ten minutes.

The visitors thought they had won it late on, but Wilson’s header was ruled out for offside. York U11s crashed out of the Green ’Un Cup after a 6-0 defeat at Sheffield.

York got off to the worst possible start, conceding two early goals to a team many consider to be the best U11s side in Yorkshire.

York finally created their first chance on 17 minutes, but Dan Allanson blazed over the bar from close range.

Sheffield scored two more goals just before the half-time to lead 4-0.

York showed great spirit in the second period, with hard-working performances from Jake Rhodes, Joe Crosby, Jamie Higginbotham and Dominic Jackson, despite conceding two further goals.
