Medieval merriment arrives in York today as The Market Square Group’s themed outdoor market stops off for an seven-day feast of fun.
The market, which will run from today until Wednesday, February 20, in Parliament Street, promises tasty traditional fare including delicious hog roasts, hearty breads, old English meads and ciders and juicy sausages for visitors to enjoy.
Stallholders decked out in medieval costume will be trading high-quality crafts, clothing, fine jewellery and textiles and visitors will be able to enjoy demonstrations of traditional skills including pottery and spinning. There also promises to be a gathering of characters from this bygone age, with wandering musicians and fools.
Paul Kennedy from organisers, The Market Square Group, said: “The Medieval Market features a range of food and drink that would have been familiar to our ancestors in medieval times. The crafts, clothing, jewellery, furnishings and accessories are specifically selected for their materials that would have been available to craftsmen during this fascinating period.
“The folk of York can expect an international line-up of stalls, but with special focus on some of our own home-grown specialities too. And anyone found not joining in the fun may find themselves in the stocks at the mercy of our merry band of traders and entertainers.”
