SHROVE Tuesday celebrations were held across York, North and East Yorkshire, with a host of pancake-themed events for children and adults alike, writes Lydia Winter.
The Acomb traders’ association, Acomb Alive, put on a Pancake Race for shopkeepers and residents in Front Street.
About 30 people took part, in teams and individually, including paramedics and the local PCSO. Sue Hunter, owner of Floral Elegance and chairman of Acomb Alive, said: “We are pleased with the outcome. It was a lot of fun and brought some life to Front Street.”
In Selby area, Wistow CE School’s annual pancake celebrations took place on the school fields. Children aged between five and seven, took part, cheered on by their parents. The children have been learning about Shrove Tuesday as part of their Key Stage 1 studies.
Elsewhere, The Old Shop, at Standfield Hall Farm, Pickering served up free all-you-can-eat pancakes and waffles.
Donations from the event will go towards Safe and Sound Homes and Nightstop, charities dedicated to the housing of homeless people in York, Scarborough and Ryedale.
