HUNDREDS of youngsters from schools across York have begun rehearsing for a charity performance in York Minster this May.
Unicef is working with 14 city primary schools to help them prepare a spectacular performance in York Minster on May 1 at 7.30pm of the musical Romany Wood.
On the day, 350 children’s voices will be accompanied by the Guildhall Orchestra under the baton of Simon Wright.
The performance will be narrated by poet Ian Mcmillan, who is currently presenting The Verb on Radio 3, and the Archbishop of York, will also welcome the children and lead a brief talk about his support for the work of Unicef.
Vikki Pendry, music teacher at St Barnabas School, said: “This is such an exciting project for us to be part of.
“The children love the music and are very excited about singing in York Minster. The work of Unicef is very relevant to them and they have worked particularly hard to learn this music in the knowledge that this concert will raise money that will help to change the lives for the better of so many children who desparately need help.”
Last week, schools across York which are involved in the project held a rehearsal in York Minster. To buy tickets for the concert in May, visit the York Minster website yorkminster.org.
