NUMBER three seed Jess Hunter comfortably beat defending champion Natalie Cain to seal the York & District Ladies Squash League Open Championship title, writes Oscar Pearson.

Hunter saw off top seed Cain 3-0 (9-7, 9-4, 9-4) at Dunnington Sports & Social Club.

She beat Linda Craggs and Traci Moore before knocking out Louise Cotter in the semi-finals.

Hunter played “exceptionally well”, said tournament spokeswoman Anne Matwijiszyn, to reverse the result of last year’s semi-final, when Cain beat her en-route to winning the title.

In the Plate final, Sarah Broadhurst beat Linda Craggs in straight games (9-7, 9-7, 10-8).

She beat Susan Harrison and Sarah Smelik to reach the final, while Craggs edged past Anne Rowlands and Liz Stacey.

Matwijiszyn said: “Sarah won the match 3-0, but the score didn’t reflect Linda’s performance as she played well, matching point for point.

“But Sarah just took the edge and took the Open Plate title for 2013.”
