FINDING and exploiting the gap in between the pop and indie worlds has helped this Canadian duo sell nearly a million career records over the past decade and a half – but they still remain largely anonymous on this side of the pond.
Mainly that’s because their music, and Heartthrob is a perfect example, is most readily described as ‘growing’ on the consciousness. The twins have been more ambitious here, going for a bigger sound and, although not entirely, they have tried to move away from the expressly personal lyrics that have dominated earlier efforts –although heartbreak and longing remain central themes. Heartthrob will require some patience.
It is about as mainstream as the pair is likely to get, but the reward comes several listens down the line, rather than immediately. Bear with it and you won’t be disappointed.
