THE findings of two large-scale studies into cancer awareness in England make it clear that giving people the confidence to report potential cancer symptoms is key to improving survival rates.
The studies highlight embarrassment and fear of wasting GPs’ time as reasons for stopping people presenting and being diagnosed at an early stage. This is exactly what a new local Be Clear on Cancer campaign aimed at both the public and health professionals in Yorkshire sets out to tackle.
Over the next six weeks, hundreds of people in the area will be spreading the message in their local communities that if you’re a woman aged over 50 and you experience potential symptoms of ovarian cancer, such as feeling bloated most days for three weeks or more, it is time to see your GP.
In most cases it will be nothing to worry about, but to be sure it is best to ask for advice from a doctor or practice nurse.
