SUCCESS in finding roles for apprentices in York has seen the city’s council included on a national roll of honour.

The National Apprenticeships website showcases organisations which play their part in offering career opportunities to young people, and City of York Council has now been added to the list.

The authority currently employs 46 apprentices.

Council leader James Alexander said: “It’s great to see our efforts to increase the number of apprentices in York have been nationally recognised, and I hope we can continue to expand the range and number of apprenticeships offered in the city.”

Kersten England, the council’s chief executive, said the authority had offered 59 apprenticeships since 2011.

She said: “I’m pleased we have been able to help give some of the young people living in York the hands-on experience they need to kickstart their careers.”

The council will be taking part in National Apprenticeship Week between March 11 and 15, with its current apprentices sharing their experiences with others and senior managers at the authority being shadowed for a day.
