Students at Bootham School in York have secured their third successive Green Flag from the Eco Schools initiative.

The students who lead the campaign under the banner of BEAST – Bootham Environment And Sustainability Team – have worked tirelessly to promote eco-awareness within and beyond the school gates.

Harriet Ennis, the teacher co-ordinating the team, said: “BEAST have networked at every level in the school. Our new Year 7 class have made eco-pledges for sustainable lifestyle choices; our bursar has been terrifically supportive in every area from cleaning and waste disposal to the eco-aware designs for our new Arts Centre – everyone is right behind the drive for improved sustainability.

“But beyond all this, the students have taken up the challenge to spread the campaign into the wider community. They have teamed up with others to undertake litter picking in the local area and, most excitingly, the School is working with Oxfam in taking part in a pilot project to promote global citizenship.”
